WHAT PROJECTS IS 0.8 TO 4 MM THICK ROLLED CORK MATERIAL BEST FOR?
The thinnest rolls (0.8 mm) are perfect for hobby work, DIY projects, furniture veneers, cork decorations, coasters, or wall decor.
Slightly thicker rolls (2 – 4 mm) are ideal as a decorative layer for boards or wall coverings. They are not intended for pinning. They work great as standalone anti-slip elements or gaskets.
CORK ROLL VS CORK SHEET – WHICH IS BETTER?
Cork roll is ideal for larger projects, as it minimises the number of joints and provides a uniform and continuous surface. Keep in mind that before use, the cork roll needs to be straightened, for example, by unrolling and weighing it flat for a few hours.
Cork sheets are better for smaller projects and don’t require straightening like cork rolls do.
DO YOU HAVE SELF-ADHESIVE CORK FOR WALLS?
Yes, we offer cork rolls for walls with a self-adhesive layer, making installation easier.
IS ROLLED CORK MATERIAL GOOD FOR A CORKBOARD?
Yes, but for creating a functional corkboard, we recommend using thicknesses between 5 and 10 mm.
WHAT IS THE BEST MATERIAL TO COMBINE WITH THIN CORK?
Thin cork can be combined with soft fibreboard, styrofoam, or cardboard.
HOW TO CUT AND SHAPE CORK PRECISELY?
You can cut cork rolls using regular cutting tools, like a knife or scissors, depending on the thickness of the material. For thicker cork, use a sharp blade to ensure a clean cut. For precise decorations or gaskets, templates can be useful for accurately shaping the cork.
CAN NATURAL CORK BE PAINTED?
Yes, cork rolls for walls can be painted according to personal preferences. We recommend using our paints for natural cork.
WHY DOES NATURAL CORK NEED TO BE ACCLIMATISED BEFORE INSTALLATION?
Acclimatising natural cork for 72 hours before installation is an essential step to allow the material to adjust to the room conditions. It helps minimise the risk of later deformations. Without this, natural cork may peel or detach from the wall.
HOW TO INSTALL NATURAL CORK ON THE WALL?
It's best to use contact adhesive, such as Wakol D-3540.
Installation instructions:
- Surface preparation: Check if the wall is clean, dry, and even.
- Prepare the adhesive: Apply Wakol D-3540 adhesive to both the wall and the back of the cork roll, using a brush or roller to ensure an even layer of adhesive across the surface. The average adhesive consumption is 150-250 g/m², meaning that 0.8 kg of adhesive is sufficient for around 4 m², and a 2.5 kg container covers approximately 12.5 m² of surface area.
- Wait: Allow the adhesive on both surfaces to become transparent before beginning the installation.
- Lay the roll: Gently press the cork roll onto the wall, carefully planning the layout to achieve the desired pattern. The Wakol adhesive takes approximately 24 hours to fully dry.
WILL CORK ROLLS STICK TO UNEVEN WALLS?
We do not recommend sticking natural cork to uneven walls. To ensure stability and durability of the installation, it is important that the surface is even, smooth, and clean.
HOW EASY IS IT TO KEEP NATURAL CORK CLEAN?
It's very easy to clean natural cork – just use a slightly damp cloth or a feather duster. Cork rolls for walls are low-maintenance, as their antistatic properties naturally repel dust.
IS NATURAL CORK SUITABLE FOR BATHROOMS AND KITCHENS?
Cork rolls work well in spaces where humidity ranges from 40 to 60 percent. However, be sure to avoid soaking natural cork in water, as this can compromise its quality.
HOW TO EFFECTIVELY IMPREGNATE AND PROTECT NATURAL CORK?
To protect natural cork, we recommend using wood sealants such as waxes, varnishes, stains, or oils, which help guard against moisture and damage. For wall cork, consider our cork care wax. Varnishes for walls are also easily available in hardware stores.
